Greenlee
supports the
following organizations:
Special
Olympics
The Northwestern
Illinois Special Olympics Spring Games are held every year, rain
or shine, on the second Saturday in May.
Over 700
mentally and physically handicapped individuals participate in such
events as the 50 and 100 yard dashes, long jump, shot put, softball
throw, soccer, aquatics and bocce ball. Athletes receiving a First
Place advance to the State Summer Games held at Illinois State University.
Greenlee
employee participation averages about 25 volunteers each year to
assist with the mens/boys softball throw. These groups are made up
of employees from each of the four (TEC, CDC, Research & Genoa)
Rockford area Greenlee facilities and their families.
Junior
Achievement
An organization
that Greenlee has supported for many years is Junior Achievement,
or JA. JA, established in 1919, is a national organization and is
headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The organization strives
to impact young people by educating and inspiring them to value free
enterprise, business, and economics to improve the quality of their
lives. Every year, Greenlee employees participate in various events
to help with the local Junior Achievement programs. These events
involve spending time with children and helping to raise funds for
the local chapter. Collectively, the Greenlee employees have helped
to raise almost $15,000 over the past five years for the Rock River
Valley Chapter of Junior Achievement.
Each spring,
Greenlee participate with the Groundhog Job Shadow Day Program. The
program is coordinated by Junior Achievement, America's Promise,
the American Society of Association Executives, and the National
School-to-Work Opportunities office. The program provides employers,
like Greenlee, with a unique and informative way to directly interact
with tomorrow's workforce. Employees volunteer their time to be "shadowed" by
high school students from a local school. The students spend the
day with an employee, learning about and even helping to do the employee's
job.
Also in
the spring, employees step out of the business environment and into
the school environment by volunteering to teach various programs
to students in neighborhood schools. The programs are arranged to
run approximately six weeks, with students earning a ‘Certificate
of Achievement’ at the completion of the course. Each program
is designed for each elementary grade level and structured using
classroom discussion and hands-on activities. Volunteers receive
packets of training materials that include lesson plans, posters,
workbooks, and other supplies. Greenlee often caps off the sessions
by inviting the students to tour one of our Rockford manufacturing
facilities.
Paint-A-Thon
Since
the Salvation Army began this program 15 years ago, Greenlee has
supported the community Paint-a-Thon held each August. Joining other
Rockford area firms, such as paint manufacturer Valspar, Greenlee
volunteers have helped rebuild roofs and porches, install windows
and doors, and of course, paint!
This rewarding
endeavor helps beautify Rockford: those interested in joining next
year's fun are encouraged to volunteer for Paint-a-Thon next August!
Blood
Drive
Greenlee
employees donate blood in this annual volunteer effort coordinated
with the Northern Illinois Blood Bank. This worthy cause is important
to general public safety, as NIBB is the principal supplier of blood
in the Rockford area.
As only
about 5% of eligible U.S. citizens provide nearly all of the country's
transfusion supplies, NIBB urges anyone wishing to donate to call
them at 815 965 8751, from 11:30 to 6:30 Mon-Thurs and from 7 to
12:30 on Fri.
Giving
blood is safe and simple, takes under an hour, and is reported by
most as quite painless. NIBB thanks Greenlee for its thoughtful employee
participation!
United
Way
Greenlee
Textron has a long history of community involvement and support.
Our most significant events are our annual United Way campaigns held
in multiple cities across the United States to support the local
communities in which we live and work. The largest of these campaigns
is held in Rockford, IL in support of the Rock River Valley chapter
of the United Way.
In 2005,
Greenlee was recognized as one of the leading contributors to the
Rock River Valley United Way chapter with corporate and employee
donations totaling more than $85,000, a 14% increase over 2004 giving.
Additionally,
the Rockford location has one of the highest levels of Leadership
giving in the community, with 6% of the employee base (24 employees)
donating over $500 annually.
Working
together, we continue to provide the United Way the means to deliver
beneficial programs to children, adults, and the elderly; helping
to invest in our communities across the United States.
